Oprah Daily: Is Everyone Taking Beta-Blockers Without Me?
Featuring Barry K. Herman, MD, MMM, DLFAPA, Chief Medical Officer at Mentavi Health. Written by Christina Manian. Published in Oprah Daily.
This article looks at beta-blockers, a class of medication that has shown up in awards-season conversations and on social media as a way to cope with anxiety. It explains what these medicines do, how they differ from other anxiety medications, and what psychiatrists say about using them.
In the article, Dr. Herman describes beta-blockers as “turning down the volume on the body’s alarm system.” They can ease physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heart or shaky hands. They do not necessarily change the anxious thoughts that set that alarm off.
He also points out that these medicines carry risks and are not right for everyone. They can cause side effects, and they can interact with other medicines or health conditions. Using them for anxiety is off-label, which means it is not an approved use for anxiety.
Dr. Herman adds that therapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy, and other evidence-based treatments may offer more lasting benefit, because they help with the thoughts and habits that keep anxiety going.
Anxiety shows up in the body as well as the mind. A pounding heart or sweaty palms can feel like proof that something is wrong, which can make worry grow. Understanding that link is one reason a thorough evaluation matters before anyone decides on a path.
A medicine that works fast in one moment is not the same as a plan for managing anxiety over time. If anxiety is getting in the way of work, relationships, or daily life, talk with a licensed clinician about your options. Don’t start or stop a medicine without talking with your prescriber.
Barry K. Herman, MD, MMM, DLFAPA, is Chief Medical Officer at Mentavi Health and a double board certified psychiatrist.
